Traditionally, Brabant was strongly Roman Catholic, but during the second part of 20th century, a rapid secularization took place in the province, as it did in the rest of the country. Although there has been a big decrease in the number of people who attend church, the traditions are still part of the culture. For instance, Carnival, which takes place five days before Ash Wednesday.
Today, there is a growth in the number of residents who practice other religions, for instnace, Islam. In the Netherlands, every individual has the right to practice their religion or conviction.
